Digital Video in the PDP Television, Neon Installation

Flower Buddha (2022– ), If Not Now, When?

Flower Buddha is an ongoing series of video installations by VISUALS FROM. As its title suggests, the work presents flowers and Buddhist sculptures as still-life compositions. Intentionally using an outdated digital camera, the artist records flowers arranged in a vase alongside small Buddhist figures, and displays the footage on televisions that are more than a decade old. Once sold as premium consumer electronics worth several million Korean won, these televisions have since become inexpensive secondhand objects, their former value diminished by the rapid pace of technological obsolescence.

Working primarily with photography and video, the artist is interested not simply in letting places, moments, people, and devices pass into memory, but in observing how they transform over time. Particular attention is given to the aging of digital technologies—the gradual obsolescence of both electronic devices and the data they contain. For viewers accustomed to constantly adapting to an ever-changing digital environment, the worn monitor and low-resolution imagery evoke a quiet sense of nostalgia.

Within the looping video, only light and the flower responding to it—subtly breathing and changing—reveal the passage of time. At first glance, the contemplative Bodhisattva and the reclining Buddha appear to be little more than decorative objects within the frame. Yet as viewers continue to observe the almost imperceptible movement of this still-life image, their gaze gradually shifts from looking at the screen itself to adopting the perspective of the Buddhist figures as they quietly face the flower. Much like the figures in traditional East Asian landscape paintings who invite viewers into the depicted scenery, the sculptures become surrogate viewers. Projecting themselves into their silent gaze, audiences encounter the flower as a landscape unfolding across a temporal space where past and present coexist.

Accompanying the installation is the text-based neon work If Not Now, When? (2022), whose direct question confronts viewers with an immediate sense of urgency, inviting them to reflect on the present moment itself.
